10 Best Spawn Variants, Ranked
Apr 23, 2025
Spawn is one of the most iconic, popular and successful independent comic book characters in the history of the medium, with the dark antihero helping to put Image Comics on the map in the early 1990s. Spawn is one of many hellspawns in his mythos, with his alter ego being Al Simmons. Of course, Al is only one of several hundred versions of the character, with the legacy of these hellish warriors existing long before him.
The Spawn multiverse is full of variants of the hellspawn concept, with some of these predating Al Simmons by centuries. Likewise, others are alternate universe variations, though almost all of them possess similar abilities. Ironically, one of the weakest Spawns has become one of the most popular variants, with this Wild West antihero even having his own comic books.

10 Medieval Spawn Has a Long Legal History
First Appearance: Spawn #9 by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane
Medieval Spawn was one of the first Spawn variants to appear in the comics, with the character fittingly living centuries before the birth of Al Simmons. Medieval Spawn was a knight named Sir John of York, and despite his hellish nature, he was just as chivalrous as many might expect. Sadly, his second death happened when he was killed by the angel Angela (now a part of the Marvel Universe and related to Thor, the God of Thunder), but he's since lived again by way of his helmet in the current Spawn comic books.
