Tensions in Rivers State may be starting to calm down after several weeks of political unrest.

President Bola Tinubu and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently held a private meeting in London, raising hopes for peace and a possible return of the governor to office.

According to reports, Governor Fubara requested the meeting, which happened shortly after President Tinubu returned from a trip to Paris.

Though the presidency has not officially confirmed the meeting, sources close to the president said it was held to find a peaceful solution to the political crisis in the oil- rich state.

This was the first time the two leaders met face- to- face since President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025.

At that time, Fubara, his deputy, and all the lawmakers in the state' s House of Assembly were suspended due to what the president described as " months of political instability" that had stopped normal government work and put national peace at risk.

Tinubu then appointed retired naval officer Ibok- Ete Ibas as the temporary sole administrator of the state, giving him full powers to run the state' s affairs.

People close to the presidency say Fubara is now ready to make peace and even consider switching to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.
