These shows featured watershed moments, creating cultural history by being the first on television, not only by shining a light on how teenagers and young people actually feel, but also more complicated topics like substance abuse, sexual assault, and suicide.
Whether it's the deaf community in Switched at Birth or the theater kids in Glee, teens felt heard and seen by these teen shows. They also helped normalize and popularize things that were often seen as other or weird.

However, there was backlash for the show’s explicit depiction of suicide, which Netflix later removed from the episode.
