U.S. Government Offers Rare Opportunity for Kenyans to Teach Kiswahili Under Fulbright Program

In a rare and exciting opportunity for Kenyan educators, the United States government, under the administration of President Donald Trump.
Has opened doors for Kenyans to teach Kiswahili in American institutions through the prestigious Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) programme.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, April 23, by the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. According to the embassy, the initiative specifically targets Kenyans who are passionate about teaching Kiswahili, one of East Africa’s most widely spoken languages.
The programme is scheduled to run for one academic year, from 2026 to 2027.
The Fulbright FLTA programme aims to foster cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the United States and other countries.
Selected individuals will serve as teaching assistants for Kiswahili in American colleges and universities while also taking academic courses to enhance their teaching skills and deepen their understanding of U.S. culture and educational systems.
“This is a unique opportunity for Kenyans to share their language and culture, while gaining invaluable experience in American higher education institutions,” the U.S. Embassy stated.
The embassy further emphasized that the programme is not only about teaching but also about building global networks and leadership capabilities.
