Apr 25, 2025
The Bank of Ghana has released new data showing the steady growth of the country’s gold reserves. The data shows the amount of gold reserves (in tons), the country currently have.
The report reveals how the central bank has been adding more gold to its reserves month after month.
According to the report released by the Bank of Ghana on its Facebook page on Friday, 25th April, 2025, the figures as of January 31, 2025, the total gold held by the Bank of Ghana was 30.62 metric tons. This shows an impressive increase compared to May 2023, when the reserves stood at only 8.78 tons.
This growth is part of the central bank’s strategy to strengthen Ghana’s economy by investing in gold, a valuable natural resource the country is known for. By holding more gold, the Bank of Ghana aims to protect the country’s economy from unexpected financial problems in the world.
In June 2023, the gold reserves rose to 10.01 tons, and by the end of December 2023, it had reached 19.50 tons. The reserves continued to increase throughout 2024, rising to 29.31 tons by November. In December 2024, the figure jumped again to 30.53 tons, with a small increase to 30.62 tons in January 2025.
This effort by the Bank of Ghana to boost gold reserves is part of a larger plan to reduce the country's dependence on foreign currencies like the US dollar. When Ghana holds more gold, it can reduce the pressure on the cedi and improve financial stability.
