GCB’s New Charges Spark Anger Across Ghana
Apr 30, 2025
Public backlash is growing against Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) as it prepares to introduce new service charges starting May 1, 2025. Many Ghanaians are accusing the bank of repackaging the scrapped electronic levy in a different form, sparking outrage on social media.
Under the new policy, GCB customers will pay a monthly fee of ₵15, known as the “E-Bundle” charge, to access digital banking services such as the GCB mobile app and internet banking. Although senior citizens aged 60 and above are exempt, younger customers—who make up the bulk of mobile banking users—are voicing their frustration over what they see as an unfair cost.
Other new charges include a 1% fee on all Bank-to-Wallet transfers made via GCB’s mobile platforms. Additionally, customers withdrawing GHC10,000 or more from ATMs will be charged a flat GHC20 fee.
These changes come just months after the government officially scrapped the controversial e-levy, a move celebrated by many. Now, GCB’s new charges are being widely criticised as a backdoor method to reintroduce similar costs to customers.
Social media users have responded angrily, calling the charges exploitative. Some customers are threatening to close their accounts or move their money to other banks. A few have even called for a mass boycott of GCB unless the bank reconsiders its decision.
