Hunter x Hunter is one of the best-written shonen anime series of all time, and this is best seen through the strength of its characters. Whether it's protagonists like Gon Feecss and Kurapika Kurta, or antagonists like Chrollo Lucilfer and Meruem, practically every major character is a complex figure. Yoshihiro Togashi is a master of his craft and, even as of the currently ongoing Succession Contest Arc, he's still creating new characters who rank among the best-written in the manga.

The Chimera Ant Arc is often cited as one of the best in any shonen anime, and it wouldn't be as magical as it is without Komugi. A sweet, blind, sickly girl with deeply held self-loathing, who's also the world's greatest Gungi player, Komugi is simple, and it's through her simplicity that she's able to make a massive impact on Meruem. During their Gungi matches, Komugi and Meruem both find their first true friend, making Komugi the happiest she's ever been, and stripping away the most evil parts of the Chimera Ant King.
