'One of a Kind': Godfather of Harlem's Rome Flynn on Playing Iconic Gangster Frank Lucas
May 5, 2025
Godfather of Harlem Season 4 has been even more intense with the arrival of Frank Lucas. While Bumpy Johnson has had a deep rivalry with Vincent Gigante, the war he wages with Frank is something totally different. Frank may have literally stepped off the bus in his debut, but he's a lot smarter -- and more dangerous -- than he initially appears.
In an interview with CBR, actor Rome Flynn talks about his transition from playing Derrick Gibson on Chicago Fire to portraying someone as dark and power-hungry as Frank Lucas. He explains how art imitated life in one significant way that helped his performance. Plus, find out why he thinks Godfather of Harlem is a "one of a kind" TV series.
CBR: The last time TV viewers saw you was as firefighter Derrick Gibson on Chicago Fire. Frank could not be more different from Gibson, so what's it like to shift from being a hero on a network TV procedural to an antagonist in a more complicated show?
Rome Flynn: Very different approaches, both equally challenging in [their] own way. I've found a heavy level of appreciation for our essential workers. They're heroes of our communities, and so to be able to play a firefighter and go through the process of learning what those things are that they did, and also being put in those situations, I just have a newfound respect and appreciation for them.
