Cardinal Mamberti Reveals Pope Francis’ Unwavering Commitment To His Mission Until His Very Last Breath
May 6, 2025
On Sunday, May 4, the Catholic Church marked a deeply emotional milestone as Cardinal Dominique Mamberti presided over the final Novemdiale Mass in Saint Peter' s Basilica, offering a solemn farewell to Pope Francis. The Mass concluded the traditional nine days of mourning observed after the passing of a pope, drawing the College of Cardinals and faithful mourners together in reverent unity.
During his homily, Cardinal Mamberti reflected on the enduring mission of Saint Peter, describing it as a life of love manifested through unwavering service to the Church and humanity. He drew parallels between Peter' s journey and the legacy of Pope Francis, who, he said, lived out his calling with deep humility and dedication until his final moments.
Citing the Gospel account of the Risen Christ' s appearance by the Sea of Tiberias, Mamberti described Pope Francis as one who " was animated by the Lord' s love and remained faithful to his mission until the exhaustion of his strength. " The Scripture passage, he emphasized, is especially meaningful as the Church prepares for the upcoming Conclave on May 7, where a new successor to Peter will be chosen.
Mamberti praised Pope Francis' life- long dedication to proclaiming the joy of the Gospel. Whether through his writings, travels, pastoral visits, or simple acts of kindness, he was a pope who did not shy away from confronting injustice and embracing the marginalized.
