PGA Tour caddie owns up to bizarre thing he did during Rory McIlroy's tee shot
May 7, 2025

Former NFL quarterback Derek Anderson took an unusual approach to golf caddie etiquette after watching Rory McIlroy hit a tee shot at the Zurich Classic

Former NFL quarterback Derek Anderson recently debuted as a PGA Tour caddie and had a unique reaction to watching Rory McIlroy hit a tee shot.
Anderson enjoyed a 14-season career in the NFL, including making the 2007 Pro Bowl after starring for the Cleveland Browns. The 41-year-old also played for the Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and Buffalo Bills, but clearly spent a portion of his free time on the golf course.
Once dubbed the best golfer in the NFL by ESPN, Anderson was named Kevin Chappell’s caddie at the recent Zurich Classic. The four-ball format saw Chappell and Tom Hoge paired with Shane Lowry and McIlroy in New Orleans, and the retired quarterback was shocked as he watched the latter approach his first tee shot.
“So, we get to the tee. Obviously, there’s a pecking order on where you stand on the tee. I figured that out pretty quickly,” Anderson told GOLF’s Subpar. “I was going to be in the back most of the day.
“[McIlroy] pulls a driver, smashes it, goes up in the air, and I’m like [cheering]. I looked around and I was like, ‘No, not it.’
Asked about Chappell’s response to his caddie’s unorthodox reaction, Anderson admitted: “I don’t think he even saw it. After I did it, we were like walking down the fairway and he was like, ‘let’s go’, and I kind of got into it and said, ‘we’re gonna kick some a– today’. I kind of got away from the fact that I’m watching Rory.”
