Mikel Arteta sack verdict delivered after Arsenal Champions League exit
May 9, 2025
Arteta was defiant in defeat and claimed his team were better than PSG
Arsenal have once again come within touching distance of major honours, only to fall away in the final moments, with defeat in the Champions League semi-final to PSG proving to be a bitter pill to swallow for Mikel Arteta. To fall agonisingly short again has had some people questioning Arteta's future at the club, and whether he can make them winners - but Arsenal fans in the football.london comments section say that he is still the right man for the job.
Arteta was both proud and defiant in defeat in his post-match comments, saying that Arsenal were the team who deserved to face Inter Milan in the final. He said: "I think we deserve much more. When you analyse both games, who has been the best player, the MVP has been the same player, their goalkeeper. And the Champions League is decided in the boxes, and it's won the game for them because obviously today after 20 minutes and what happened in London as well, the result should have been very different."
It's the second time in two seasons that a major trophy has seemed to be in sight, only to have it snatched away. Second place in the Premier League last year should have been a moment to build upon, but transfer difficulties, key injuries, and poor luck have made each bad moment for Arsenal worse.
