Gov’t Hands Over Kilembe Mines to Sarrai Group, Nile Fibreboard in Major Redevelopment Deal
May 10, 2025
Kasese, Uganda — The Government of Uganda has officially handed over the long-dormant Kilembe Mines to Sarrai Group Ltd and Nile Fibreboard Ltd, setting the stage for a major redevelopment initiative aimed at reviving copper production and revitalizing the local economy in Kasese.
The handover ceremony, presided over by Energy and Mineral Development Minister Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, marked a significant milestone in Uganda’s push to add value to its mineral resources under the National Development Plan IV and the African Transformation Mining Strategy (ATMS).
The project is being undertaken in partnership with the Uganda National Mining Company (UNMC), which holds a 15% equity stake.
“This flagship project will produce copper cathodes and cobalt metal, critical for the transition to clean energy technologies, and drive Uganda’s industrialisation,” said Minister Nankabirwa.
The redevelopment plan also includes the assessment of the Mubuku I Hydro Power Station to support energy needs, while the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (UEDCL) will ensure interim power supply for operations.
In her remarks, Minister Nankabirwa urged local leaders and the surrounding communities to support the investment by halting encroachment, theft, and other disruptions.
“Government has delivered the investment; it is now our collective duty to protect it and unlock the full potential of Kilembe Mines for our people,” she emphasized.
