The 10 Best '90s TV Dads, Ranked
May 12, 2025
The best TV dads aren’t always kind and sweet. Some of them are overly strict, others take a back seat to the moms who do all the heavy lifting. Some of them are just plain funny. When it comes to the 1990s, TV dads ran the gamut, from ones who didn’t hesitate to call their kids “dumba**ses” to ones learning the ropes, and others teaching their kids valuable lessons at the end of every episode.
From grunting dads to screaming ones, dads filled with wisdom and those who are still figuring it out, the best ‘90s TV dads are characters fans would love to sit down with, have a chat, and soak up all their personality.
10 Tim Taylor
'Home Improvement' (1991–1999)
The manly grunts, the hilarious parenting, the odd jobs around the house that he often botched, yet Tim Taylor (Tim Allen) from was one of the funniest, most endearing TV dads of the decade. While his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) arguably did most of the hands-on parenting of their three sons, Tim always delivered a lesson or two when it was needed.
He was smart enough to know that he didn’t have all the answers, or funny enough to pretend that he did. When he finally came to a realization that he had an issue he couldn’t solve, he paid a visit to his wise neighbor, Wilson (Earl Hindman), who was always there to peek over the top of the fence and help. Tim was the stereotypical dad who loved steak, fixing things, and tough love.
