After 5 years, Chelsea’s Restaurant bids farewell and and makes way for a familiar face
May 13, 2025
Syracuse, N.Y. — For the past five years, Chelsea’s Restaurant & Bar quietly carved out its own identity at the corner of Velasko and McDonald roads. It wasn’t trying to be the next Kelley’s, the neighborhood institution that occupied the same space for nearly four decades.
Instead, Chelsea’s offered its own spin: elevated comfort food, signature cocktails and a cozy spot to gather for dinner and drinks. Now, owner Marty Richardson says it’s time to turn the page.
Chelsea’s will close for good on June 28, making room for a new venture from two familiar faces.
“This has been such a rewarding chapter,” Richardson said. “But it’s time to move on.”
Richardson isn’t leaving the hospitality business. She still runs Nestico’s...Too diner in Fairmount, E.A.T. (Eggs & Toast) and Rise & Grind Café. She will be opening a Rise & Grind in downtown Syracuse within the next few months.
The end of Chelsea’s is also a beginning—for someone else. Longtime Chelsea’s manager, Heather Van Hoose, and her husband Adam are taking over the space for a brand new venture of their own.
They’ll be opening Lannie’s Tavern in mid-July.
“We are so excited,” Heather said last weekend. “We’ve gotten to know so many people in the community during our years at Chelsea’s and Kelley’s, and we look forward to the next chapter.”
