The franchise is officially back, as Suzanne Collins publishes her second sequel to the iconic dystopian series. Sunrise on the Reaping takes place twenty-four years before the events of the first book, following Haymitch Abernathy as he participates in the 50th Hunger Games and Second Quarter Quell. The book delves deeper into the growing dissent of the Districts leading up to Katniss's arrival on the scene in the original trilogy, revealing new details that change the way readers view certain characters therein. A feature adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping is officially set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026, marking the sixth film in the Hunger Games franchise.
After the release of Sunrise on the Reaping, fans eagerly theorize about who could lead the next Hunger Games prequel. Many characters' names have been thrown out, with Finnick Odair, Johanna Mason, and other Hunger Games Victors standing out as the most obvious choices to lead Collins's next Hunger Games book. However, the best story for a prequel may not focus on a Hunger Games Victor at all, but rather another important character who proved pivotal in overthrowing the Capitol: President Alma Coin of District 13. Not only would a prequel centered around Coin help flesh out a criminally underdeveloped part of Panem, but it would also allow for Suzanne Collins to deliver a spiritual successor to her first Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
