10 Greatest War Movies of the 2020s (So Far)
May 18, 2025
Are war movies losing their appeal in the 2020s? Unlike in previous decades, most of Hollywood’s big-time directors haven’t shown an interest in exploring the genre in the 2020s. Steven Spielberg hasn’t announced any plans to go that route, and neither have Sam Mendes, Clint Eastwood, or other top filmmakers who tend to enjoy throwing people onto the battlefield. For now, it appears Guy Ritchie is the only big name keeping the fire alive.
All this is surprising considering that when made by a celebrated director and a major studio, with a big budget, a war movie is always guaranteed a harvest during award season. Are there no more great stories to tell? Well, the War in Ukraine has been quite controversial, so no one is touching it. No other major event is happening globally either. However, a few directors have managed to make something interesting for fans in this decade.
Here are the best war movies of the 2020s so far.
