On the verge of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru had to fight the weather gods at their home, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, and the latter won, disappointing not just thousands of fans who had turned up to pay a tribute to Virat Kohli but also the Kolkata Knight Riders, who were eliminated from the competition.
A rain of varying intensity that started around 6 pm never relented, as even the toss couldn’t take place and the officials called off the match around 10:25 pm.
The Royal Challengers now have 17 points from 12 games and a victory from their remaining two matches will be enough for them to seal a berth in the playoffs. They play the Sunrisers Hyderabad at home and then travel to Lucknow to play the Super Giants in their final league game.
In case any of these two games is washed out, RCB will go through, since they need just one point to qualify.
With 17, RCB are not quite in the playoffs yet, as five franchises can still finish on 17 or more points. That can happen if the Punjab Kings defeat the Rajasthan Royals but lose their last two matches to the Delhi Capitals and the Mumbai Indians.
If Mumbai defeat Delhi, then RCB, MI, GT, DC and PBKS can all finish on 17 or more points with eight victories, in which case run rates will come into play.
