The Chilling Tale Of Clifford Orji: Nigeria’s First Known Cannibal And His Mysterious End
May 19, 2025
Clifford Orji remains one of Nigeria' s most terrifying criminal figures, remembered for his gruesome acts that shocked the nation. His story is filled with disturbing details, making him the country' s first known cannibal. Living under a bridge in Oshodi- Isolo, Lagos, Orji posed as a mentally unstable man, using his supposed madness as a cover for his horrifying crimes.
Orji was arrested on February 3, 1999, after police discovered disturbing evidence at his hideout. A woman, barely alive, was found near his makeshift home, having endured unimaginable suffering. Authorities uncovered human body parts, skulls, and cooked flesh at the scene, confirming suspicions that Orji had been consuming human meat for years. His confessions revealed a twisted mind that viewed cannibalism as a norm, further deepening the horror surrounding his case.
Despite the weight of his crimes, Orji was never brought to trial. Instead, he was detained at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, where he spent 13 years in custody. Over time, his mental health declined, leading many to question whether he was genuinely mentally unstable or feigning illness to avoid severe punishment. In April 2012, he attempted to sue the Lagos State Attorney- General for unlawful imprisonment, but his case was swiftly dismissed.
