NXT first debuted on WWE programming in 2010 as a hybrid reality-wrestling show to find the next WWE superstar, before it later transitioned into WWE’s developmental brand, replacing FCW. From there, under the guidance of Triple H, NXT grew into WWE’s definitive third brand, becoming a ‘super-indie’ in many ways, and providing an alternative to both RAW and SmackDown.
Over the years, some of the world’s best have come through NXT, and some of WWE’s greatest ever matches have taken place on either weekly shows or special events. TheSportster’s rating system will determine the very best NXT matches in history. These ratings will be compared to those from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and Cagematch.Net.

The vast majority of memorable NXT matches came during the black & gold era of the brand, which is where we will delve into when revisiting the best matches in the history of WWE's developmental system. We will assess a match from the very first live event NXT held on the WWE Network between two world class wrestlers in a match that truly cemented their place in the hearts of the WWE fans, in addition to two show-stealing classics that took place at the very same show at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans 2018, which is among the best TakeOver events in the entire history of the series.
