May 21, 2025
Edwin Watenya Sifuna is a prominent Kenyan lawyer and politician, currently serving as the Senator for Nairobi County and the Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Born on May 22, 1982, in Mumias, Kakamega County, Sifuna has built a distinguished career in both law and politics.
He began his education at Kakamega Township Primary School and proceeded to Musingu High School for his secondary education. Sifuna then joined the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2006. He completed his legal training at the Kenya School of Law and was admitted to the Bar in 2008. Over the years, he has worked with top firms like Kairu & McCourt Advocates and corporate entities such as Magnate Ventures. He is also the founder of E. Sifuna & Associates Advocates, a firm specializing in corporate and employment law.
Sifuna's political journey began in 2013 when he joined the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) as part of its Technical Committee. He later served a similar role in the National Super Alliance (NASA). Though he lost the 2017 Nairobi senatorial race to Johnson Sakaja, he remained active in politics and was elected Nairobi Senator in 2022 with over 716,000 votes. In 2023, he was appointed Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate.
Raised in a Catholic household, Sifuna credits his work ethic to his parents—his father, a former civil servant, and his mother, a retired teacher. He is married and has one daughter. Outside politics and law, he enjoys football and is a passionate supporter of AFC Leopards and Chelsea FC.
