Kenyans React as Raila Donates 5 Acres of Land to Govt for the Construction of Affordable Housing Project
May 29, 2025
The announcement that ODM leader Raila Odinga has donated five acres of personal land to the government for the construction of an affordable housing project in Kisumu has stirred intense debate among Kenyans online.
President William Ruto, who is currently on a three- day development tour of the Nyanza region ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations, made the revelation on Thursday, May 29, during a public address in Kisumu. The President was in the county to officially hand over the first phase of the LAPFUND Makasembo Affordable Housing Project, which has delivered 910 housing units.
" I have come with Raila, who has given us his personal land amounting to 5 acres to construct the affordable houses so that the people of Kisumu City can also benefit, " Ruto told the crowd. He commended the former Prime Minister for supporting his administration' s flagship project, describing the gesture as a symbol of patriotism and unity.
Raila, in his remarks, urged the residents of Kisumu to rally behind government development initiatives and set aside political differences for the sake of progress in the region.
Despite the seemingly positive collaboration between the two leaders, the move has sparked divided reactions across social media. Some Kenyans questioned Raila' s intentions, suggesting the donation could be part of a covert deal with the government or even a veiled land sale disguised as a donation.
