Created by Jack Kirby for his 1976 Eternals series, the Celestials are nearly all-powerful beings created at the dawn of the Marvel Universe. Desiring to create, the Celestials went to war with the First Firmament, and their evil counterparts, the Aspirants, shattered the first universe into the first multiverse and began the multiversal cycles. With the Marvel Universe now born, the Celestials were tasked with spreading life throughout the cosmos and maintaining the delicate balance of creation and destruction.

Being the driving force for nearly all life across the universe, there are few places in the world that the immortal beings have not directly influenced. Constantly in a state of death and rebirth, the Celestial's critical role in maintaining the multiverse is only rivaled by the cosmic entities that embody it, such as Eternity or the Living Tribunal. While mainly concerned with the infinite reaches of space, the Celestials have taken a particular interest in the events of Earth-616 and have intervened numerous times in their judgment of the universe.
