How To Lead When Everything Feels Uncertain
Jun 3, 2025
Uncertainty isn’t coming. It’s already here. Every headline, every meeting, every forecast-chaos is the new normal.
However, there is a silver lining in all of this.
Want to know who people remember? The captain who guided the ship through the storm-not the one who sailed on sunny days.
Those who lead through this uncertainty well, will be the ones who will be noticed and promoted.
Here’s where to begin:

Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t control the storm. But you can build a better boat.
Prioritize communication. There is no such thing as over communicating during times of uncertainty, even if this means simply telling the team you still don’t have an answer to questions that are top of mind for them. The goal here is to keep people in the loop, which will help to calm down their nerves and allow them to focus on tasks at hand.
Lead with empathy and humanity. When communicating, be empathetic. Not everyone has been through tumultuous times before. Validate people’s feelings and provide reassurance. Be a human first; leader second.
Communicate with radical clarity. Share what you know and what you don’t know. Avoid corporate jargon. Use simple, direct language and don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know,” or “At this point in time, I’m unable to comment.”
