DRC: Kasenyi Residents Jubilant as UPDF Deploys to Curb Ethnic Clashes
Jun 5, 2025
Residents of Kasenyi in the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) troops with jubilation after their deployment to prevent inter-ethnic fighting and protect the population.
According to the Acting Director of Defence Public Information Col Chris Magezi, the UPDF also occupied Tchomia for the same purpose. Kasenyi is located on the shores of Lake Albert, southeast of Bunia.
“UPDF troops being welcomed in Kasenyi, DRC, today. It lies on the shores of Lake Albert, southeast of Bunia,” Col Magezi posted on X. “We occupied it and Tchomia today to prevent inter-ethnic fighting and to protect the population.”
President Yoweri Museveni recently praised the UPDF for the major strides made in fighting insurgents in the DRC, where it successfully neutralized the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) with the support of the Congolese Army.
Additionally, the UPDF has helped curb the sectarian CODECO militia, which had been targeting communities in Ituri and collaborating with the ADF.
These efforts have brought stability to the region, marking a major success for the UPDF.
Col Magezi also shared a map showing that the UPDF is currently operating across a large area in Eastern DRC.
