Pricing and Pricing Tiers
Grab an antivirus at random and check its list price. Chances are good that a year of protection for one device costs under $50. At $49.99 per year, Bitdefender falls right in line. Toss in another $20 and you can get three Bitdefender licenses for $69.99, but that’s the extent of volume discounts.
A Sophos subscription will run you $59.99 per year, which sounds more expensive until you learn that it covers up to 10 devices, PC or Mac. It’s quite a bargain. As a bonus, you can remotely manage all your Sophos installations from wherever you happen to be. If a family member gets into a malware bind, you can take care of the problem without driving across town.
Winner: Sophos
Independent Lab Test Scores
When you’re seeking an antivirus, the big question besides “Does it fit my budget?” is the all-important “Does it work?” Testing labs around the world aim to answer that question, with hard numbers and details. I follow four such labs that publish new reports on a regular basis. Bitdefender frequently earns perfect and near-perfect scores from all four. It appears in the newest reports from three of them: AV-Test Institute, AV-Comparatives, and MRG-Effitas.
