Afrikaner family’s refugee journey to US stalls in Montana with no clear help or job prospects
Jun 12, 2025
Four members of an Afrikaner family find themselves trapped in a Montana hotel room, desperately seeking help after their American dream turned into a nightmare of unmet promises and empty pockets.
According to a report by Cape Town ETC and The South African, the family arrived in the United States through a refugee program designed for individuals claiming persecution but discovered the reality fell far short of their expectations.
Their desperate situation became public knowledge when South African expatriate @catmpt shared their story on TikTok, revealing how the family lacked basic necessities including food, money, and even a working cellphone.
The family's troubles stem from a fundamental misunderstanding of what the refugee program would provide.
They believed comprehensive support awaited them upon arrival, including ready-made housing, guaranteed employment, and complete healthcare coverage.
Instead, they found themselves alone in a hotel room with no resources and no clear path forward.
"They were understanding that they would be arriving here for complete assistance," @catmpt explained in her viral video.
"People thought they would be arriving at a house, a job, medical insurance, and other things. It isn't that way at all."
The situation has sparked mixed reactions from the South African expatriate community in America. @catmpt, who has lived in the United States for over a decade, expressed frustration at what she sees as unrealistic expectations.
