State pensioners may see a change in their tax code as new eligibility rules come in for the Winter Fuel Payment. The update comes as the DWP has outlined new qualifying criteria for the state pension-age payment.
Previously, the one-off cash was sent out to individuals receiving certain means-tested benefits, like Pension Credit. But the criteria is broadening, meaning most state-pension age people will be eligible.
However, those with an annual income exceeding £35,000 will be required to repay the sum. The payment for the past winter was either £200 or £300.
HMRC was approached to provide clarity on how they plan to reclaim the money from those over the limit. A spokesperson said: "Winter Fuel Payments will be paid automatically without a claim, and any charges will be collected via PAYE, or via self-assessment for those with other income to declare.
"We'll be providing further details in due course." If you are paying back the amount through PAYE, you will see a change in your tax code. HMRC said: "We will automatically amend customers' PAYE tax codes for them, and we will provide further details in due course.
