How to Get ChapStick Out of Clothes, According to Laundry Experts
Jun 21, 2025
It happens: A lip balm gets left in a pocket and the lid pops off, or it accidentally goes for a tumble in the wash. Are your favorite pair of pants doomed? How to get ChapStick out of clothes may be a waxy conundrum—but it is possible!
Since ChapStick is petroleum-based, you'll need more than just your regular laundry routine. As fabric-care expert James Joun explains, the lip balm "contains non-water-soluble ingredients such as oils and lanolin, which water alone won’t remove."
Here's how to get ChapStick out of clothes using laundry experts' tried-and-true methods.

The Freezer Method

For your best chance at complete removal, treat the stain before applying any additional heat to the garment (including that from your washer or dryer).

Materials Needed

Freezer
Scraping tool, such as a dull knife or spoon
Liquid dish soap
Baking soda
Clean towels
Soft-bristled toothbrush
Enzyme detergent
Oxygenated bleach powder

Instructions

Remove any excess ChapStick from your garment, taking care not to smear the product.
Wrap your garment in a clean towel and place it in the freezer for a few hours to solidify the stain.
Once frozen, scrape off the ChapStick with a dull knife or a spoon.
Wet the garment and saturate the stain with a grease-fighting dish detergent. Gently scrub the fabric. Let it sit for at least an hour.
