9 Critically Panned Movies From the 2020s That Are Misunderstood Masterpieces
Jun 27, 2025
The disagreement between movie rating systems will always be an issue for general moviegoers. Films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi have proven that there can easily be a disparity between what critics think of a movie compared to casual audiences. Rotten Tomatoes has tried its best to combat the disagreement by displaying critical and audience scores, but even those ratings can be controversial.
The 2020s have seen a huge number of films panned by critics, but there are many occasions where critics are completely wrong. Whether the type of comedy doesn't land for them or they flat out don't like what the film was going for, critics have been overly harsh on films that have been released in the current decade.
Here are 9 critically panned movies from the 2020s that are actually good.
9 'Babylon'
Babylon is a visceral, expertly crafted comedy with an incredible style and rich themes of Hollywood by Damien Chazelle. Its Wolf of Wall Street-type approach to 1920s Hollywood made the three-hour runtime fly by. Margot Robbie gave one of the best performances of her career as Nellie LaRoy, and was criminally snubbed for a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 2022. Maybe the critics didn't appreciate the outlandish aspects of the film, but if the Academy is going to award The Wolf of Wall Street with Best Picture and Best Director nominations, I don't see why Babylon would be any less well-received. Maintaining a "rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a mixed Metacritic score, this is easily a film that the critics got wrong.
