Shocking video shows the moment traditional executioner bites off live fowl’s head at funeral
Jun 28, 2025
A dramatic and shocking display of traditional rituals left many mourners surprised during the one week funeral observation for the late mother of popular Kumawood actor, Komfo Kolege, in the Ashanti Region.
The event, held at Ejisu, took an unexpected turn when a traditional executioner, known locally as an “abrafo,” performed a jaw dropping ritual, biting off the head of a live fowl in front of everyone.
In a short video shared online, the executioner, dressed in black with three machetes tucked into his clothes and his face painted black, is seen standing in front of mourners as he bites off the fowl’s head in one swift move.
The video shows many mourners watching in shock and fear.
Cultural experts say this is a rare and sacred ritual done to honour the spirit of the dead and to protect the event from evil spirits. It is usually performed during the funerals of important people like royals or those with spiritual backgrounds.
Even though the act stirred controversy, the ceremony continued with traditional drumming, dancing, and the pouring of libation, showing the strong cultural traditions of the Ashanti people.
The final funeral rites for Komfo Kolege’s mother will be held in the coming weeks, with an even bigger crowd expected.
