Helen Zille Reveals Plans To Launch A Motion of No Confidence Against President Ramaphosa
Jul 2, 2025
Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chair Helen Zille has said again that the party is thinking about bringing a motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa. This is a recent event that shows how fragile the relationships are within South Africa's Government of National Unity (GNU). This statement, which was made at a press conference, shows the ongoing political tensions and the strategic decisions being made by the coalition that was formed in June 2024.
The GNU is a group made up of the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA), and a few smaller parties. It was formed after the ANC lost its majority in the 2024 elections to make the political scene more stable. With the help of these coalition partners, President Ramaphosa was re-elected. This is a big step towards cooperative governance. But there have been problems within the alliance, especially when it comes to corruption and accountability.
Zille's careful approach shows that the DA doesn't want to upset the government, even though they are getting more and more frustrated. She stressed that the party has a "motion of no confidence against the President up our sleeve," but the action they take must be in line with what they think is wrong. "Taking a motion of no confidence is the nuclear option because we will bring the government down most likely," Zille said, making it clear how serious this move would be.
