Mourning Turns to Mayhem as Bungoma Coffin Crashes Open Mid-Ceremony
Jul 7, 2025
A somber burial ceremony in Bungoma County descended into chaos and confusion after the unthinkable happened — the coffin carrying the deceased suddenly toppled over and burst open, sending mourners into a state of panic.
The incident occurred in the village of Mukhweya, Tongaren Constituency, during what was meant to be a final, dignified send-off for the late Mzee Wafula. According to eyewitnesses, the pallbearers appeared to lose balance while navigating uneven ground near the grave site, causing the coffin to overturn violently.
The impact flung the casket lid open, partially exposing the body. Startled mourners, including elderly relatives and young children, shrieked in horror, with some running from the scene. Others could be seen weeping uncontrollably, shocked by the sudden turn of events.
“What happened was beyond disturbing. We came to pay our last respects, but instead we were left traumatized,” said a grieving relative, still shaken from the ordeal.
A video of the incident, which has since gone viral, sparked a flurry of emotional reactions on social media. Many Kenyans expressed outrage over what they termed a lack of preparedness and respect during burials, while others urged caution against sensationalizing such painful moments.
Local authorities and village elders have since appealed for calm, urging the public to respect the grieving family. Family members later managed to restore order and proceeded with the burial after brief prayers and consultations with elders.
