A senior bank manager in Maharashtra’s Baramati town died by suicide late Thursday night, with a note found at the scene mentioning work-related stress, police said on Friday.
Shivshankar Mitra, who was in his late 40s, was the chief manager at a nationalised bank branch and had recently resigned, citing health issues and workload. He was serving his notice period.
According to police, the incident took place after working hours. “Mitra asked all the staff to leave, saying he would close the branch himself. The security guard also left around 9:30 pm," an official from Baramati police station said.
Earlier, Mitra had reportedly asked a colleague to bring a rope. CCTV footage later showed him hanging himself inside the bank around 10 pm.
When Mitra did not return home or respond to calls, his wife went to the branch around midnight. Seeing the lights still on and receiving no response, she alerted the bank staff.
Once the branch was opened, Mitra was found hanging.
A note recovered from the spot mentioned work pressure as the reason behind the act. Police said no individual has been blamed in the note, and Mitra was reportedly undergoing medical treatment as well.
