The town of Bole in Ghana’s Savannah Region was shrouded in grief as Malik Dramani Mahama, the brother of President John Dramani Mahama, was laid to rest. The solemn funeral drew family members, friends, political figures, and sympathizers who came to pay their final respects.

A Sudden Loss

Malik Mahama passed away in the early hours of July 18, 2025, in the United Kingdom where he had lived and worked for several years. His sudden passing sent shockwaves through the Mahama family and the larger National Democratic Congress (NDC) fraternity, where Malik was an active member of the UK/Ireland chapter.

Burial in Bole

Following Islamic tradition, Malik’s remains were quickly transported to his hometown of Bole for burial. The Ghana Air Force provided a helicopter to fly his body from Accra to Bole, ensuring a timely and dignified Islamic burial ceremony.

Mourners gathered in large numbers, and emotional scenes unfolded as the coffin was carried from the aircraft. Elderly women and community members wept openly while Islamic prayers were offered before the body was committed to the earth.
