Kenyan Fintech Leader Leon Kiptum Kidombo Passes at 44

Leon Kiptum Kidombo, former Senior Vice President for East Africa at payments firm Flutterwave, died on August 3, 2025, at age 44.
His death has prompted widespread mourning across Africa’s fintech sector, where he was revered for driving regional growth and fostering industry collaboration.
Kiptum stepped down from Flutterwave in June 2025, citing health and personal priorities in a public LinkedIn post. “After two impactful years, I’ve decided to exit… prioritizing my health journey,” he wrote, acknowledging his tenure at the “fintech unicorn” as “incredibly insightful.” During his leadership, he expanded Flutterwave’s footprint across East Africa while strengthening ties with banks, regulators, and businesses.
Beyond Flutterwave, Kiptum chaired the Marketing Committee at Kenya’s Association of Fintechs (AFIK), growing membership and sector coordination. He co-founded leadership development platforms Rigour Africa and CDI Africa, mentoring executives through certified coaching. Known for his reflective insights on African finance, he regularly shared expertise through articles and speaking engagements.
Kiptum is survived by three children, described as his “greatest motivation.” Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
