Kadaga Calls for Tanga Odoi to Step Down Ahead of Key NRM Elections
Aug 7, 2025
The former Speaker of Parliament, Rebeca Kadaga, has called for Dr Tanga Odoi to step aside from his position as chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission.
Kadaga stated that it was time for new leadership to take over the commission, especially as the party gears up for the election of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), its highest decision-making body.
Speaking during a regional consultative meeting, Kadaga noted that the current leadership of the party's electoral body has overstayed and needs to give room for fresh ideas and renewed credibility.
She emphasized that stepping aside would not be a dismissal but a gesture of respect for internal democracy and party integrity.
"There is nothing wrong with allowing someone else to take up the responsibility. We are heading into critical elections, and we must demonstrate transparency and fairness right from within the party structures," Kadaga remarked.
Dr Tanga Odoi, who has served in the position for over a decade, has previously come under criticism from different party members regarding the management of internal primaries and electoral disputes.
His tenure has seen both praise for firm decision-making and backlash over claims of partiality and administrative inefficiencies.
While no official response has yet been issued by Tanga Odoi or the NRM secretariat, Kadaga’s comments have sparked debate within party ranks, with some members supporting her call and others defending Odoi’s continued leadership.
