During a horrific occurrence that took place in Gqeberha, a young woman named Monalisa Ojoni, who was 21 years old, and her friend Lisakhanya Maneli both unexpectedly passed away. On July 18, 2025, the two individuals were reportedly shot inside of a flat, and the authorities are currently examining the incident as a possible murder-suicide. The suspected perpetrator of the attack, a police constable called Godfrey Tholane Seleke who was 32 years old, is reported to have committed suicide after the incident ended.
Over the murders of these two women, whose lives were cut short in a terrible act of violence, the community has been left in a state of profound sorrow. Friends and family members recall Monalisa and Lisakhanya as persons who were full of life, had a generous spirit, and had promising futures ahead of them. Conversations regarding gender-based violence and the critical need for improved protections for women have been revived as a result of their tragic deaths.
Femicide and other forms of violence against women and girls are being called a national crisis by activists and local organisations, who are asking that the government take action. It is widely held that the procedures that are now in place are not adequate to handle the growing number of women who are being murdered in South Africa. #SayHerName and #AmINext are two examples of social media initiatives that continue to bring attention to the anxiety and anguish that women all over the country are experiencing.
