Coming out to someone can be a one of the most scariest things a person can do, and imagine if that someone is your religious parents. When Aquaman actress Amber Heard came out to her mother and father, it definitely changed her life.
Now, it's not news that Heard is a bisexual, but the revelation came as a complete shock to her parents when she first told them. When explaining she was in a relationship with a woman, they just couldn't process it, according to the actress.
Heard recently spoke at the Making Change On and Off the Screen panel at SXSW, where she opened up about her parents' first reaction to her bisexuality.
“I am from Austin, Texas. My dad is out of central casting Texan. Good Southern man, and I was raised in a religious home,” Heard said. “And being an outspoken lesbian, atheist, vegetarian, I remember when I told them about my relationship, that I was in love with this woman, and at the beginning of that it was just tears, tears.”
The actress said they couldn't understand, adding, “They didn’t know how to process it because, for them, it was being thrown into a binary system of processing it, negative or positive.”
Heard revealed that while her parents didn't react in a particularly negative way, they are just now coming to terms with it years later, and do think of it in a positive light finally.
“Five years later, I was getting an award, and I asked my parents to drive out to Dallas,” she explained. “And I see them sitting front and center and here I am getting this ‘gay’ award… My parents in five years, look at the journey. Attitudes and hearts can change.”
Heard first publicly came out in 2010, after waiting many years to do it.
