Parents upset with government over new JHS uniform; describe idea as a scam

Some Ghanaian parents have vastly condemned a plan by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to introduce new uniforms for Junior High School (JHS) pupils, starting next academic year.
Of what appears to be a fierce opposition to government's initiative of introducing new uniforms for Junior High Schools, some parents have described the enterprise as a sham.
GES announced in a press conference on Thursday that the new uniforms would be used in addition to the existing ones starting September this year to enable the pupils to appreciate their passage from primary level to secondary school.
But these parents have strongly opposed what they consider to be a misplaced enterprise against the pressing needs facing the education sector which requires urgent attention.
They quipped that government should focus on crucial areas by introducing ideas that seek to advance socio-economic development of the education sector.
Matters such as overcrowding in classrooms of public schools resulting from inadequate infrastructure seemed to be of immediate concern to the parents.
The parents emphasized that many schools have witnessed an increase in student population ranging from 70 to 100 pupils for each classroom, per single teacher.
Noting that a deterioration of the best pupil-teacher ratio of 35 to 45 pupils per class would affect quality education.
They also expressed worry about the fact that they would be laden with an extra cost of having to pay for these uniforms for their wards.
