Dad of teenage boy who drowned in quarry dies in Clare swimming tragedy
Jan. 13, 2020
A MAN who died after getting into difficulty while swimming on a beach was the dad of a teenage boy who drowned in a quarry.
Fran Harding, from Tipperary , passed away after being plucked from the sea at Lahinch yesterday afternoon.
His son Shay Maloney drowned alongside his friend in a disused Clare quarry in 2018.
A garda spokesman said: "Gardai in Ennistymon were alerted to an incident that occurred this morning, Sunday 12th January, 2019 at approximately 11am.
"A man (early 40s) had gone swimming at Lahinch Beach when two surfers noticed he was in difficulty. He was removed from the water and taken to University Hospital Limerick.
"The man passed away later this evening. Investigations ongoing."
The alarm was raised after a person was reported to have disappeared beneath the surface of the water off the popular Clare resort at around 10.45am.
It’s understood that a surfer spotted the man in difficulty but, according to onlookers, was unable to reach him.
The surfer is believed to have returned to shore to seek further help and raise the alarm.
Several other surfers then rushed into the sea and commenced a search for the missing man.
In the meantime, the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115, and the Doolin and Kilkee units of the Irish Coast Guard were alerted and requested to respond to the scene.
The Aran Islands RNLI lifeboat was also tasked to the incident while the National Ambulance Service and An Garda Siochana were also notified of the unfolding drama.
On arrival at the scene, the helicopter crew carried out a detailed search of the area and about 15 minutes later spotted the casualty in the water.
The helicopter’s winchman/paramedic was lowered into the sea and quickly recovered him.
