Professor Kwamena Ahwoi’s book “Working with Rawlings” foreword given by Vice Presidential aspirant for the National Democratic Congress Prof Jane Naana Agyemang has created lots of buzz among the political circle and the media. The book narrates his working relationship with charismatic former President Jerry John Rawlings when he served in his government at various capacities. The book highlights periods in their relationship including a soured relationship that started in 2004.
Professor Kwamena Ahwoi served as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and in 1997-2001 Minister for Planning and Regional Economic Cooperation and Integration.
First Encounter
He recounts his first meeting with JJ Rawlings at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation when he interviewed him, after an explicit request by the revolutionary leader to have him conduct the interview. He described the encounter as his launchpad into politics.
First Major Job
Kwabena Ahwoi was invited to join the J.J Rawlings government serving in his office at the PNDC secretariat. He says he held ideals of service to the nation into government and felt a huge responsibility to turn the nation around regardless of pay. He served as a special assistant. He was sent as part of a delegation to Lagos to Nigerian President Shehu Shagari to restore oil supplies in 1982 as a major assignment replacing former President John Kuffour who then was held in custody.
