A North Bergen driver was under the influence of drugs when he struck a woman and her son crossing a Jersey City street in November, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.
Lawrence Smith, 37, was charged on Feb. 10 with third-degree assault by auto while under the influence of narcotics, fourth-degree assault by auto while under the influence of narcotics and fourth-degree driving without a valid driver’s license causing serious bodily injury, Suarez said.
Smith was driving south on Summit Avenue at 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 23 when he struck the 50-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son, who were crossing the street at the intersection of Sherman Place, Suarez said. Smith, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala, remained at the scene.
The Jersey City woman was unresponsive at the scene and was taken to Jersey City Medical Center with serious bodily injuries, Suarez said. Her son, also of Jersey City, suffered minor injuries and was also treated at the JCMC.
