Liverpool 2-3 Atletico Madrid (2-4 Agg): Defending Champions Knocked Out Of Champions League
March. 12, 2020
Liverpool's reign as European champions came to an end in the most dramatic fashion after suffering a 3-2 loss (4-2) on aggregate to Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Liverpool came into the tie having lost 1-0 back in Spain three weeks ago and needed to overcome the deficit. Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring for the Reds in the first half, the only goal that was scored in normal time, forcing the tie to go for extra time.
At the start of the first 15 minutes, Roberto Firmino gave Jurgen Klopp's men the lead with a brilliant strike. However, Adrian made two mistakes that saw Atletico secure a victory thanks to Marcos Llorente's brace with Morata netting the winner in the 120th minute.
That ended Liverpool's run of 42 games unbeaten at Anfield as Madrid advanced to the last 8 of the Champions League.
