AJIMOBI'S DEATH: Do Nigerians Owe Fisayo Soyombo An Apology?
Jun. 25, 2020
It was just Thursday, June 18 last week that investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo tweeted his much controversial information about the health of former Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi.
"A source who has never failed me in six years of knowing him has just confirmed to me the death, in Lagos today, of Abiola Ajimobi, former Governor of Oyo State, due to underlying health conditions worsened by the Coronavirus. May his soul rest in peace," his tweet read.
His information was met with convinced reception as well as heavy criticism. On the part of the criticism, many called him out for putting out insensitive claims about the life situation of Ajimobi.

For some, the issue was that he was wishing others death, while for others who were sceptical about the truth of the matter, their opinion was that Soyombo could have allowed the Ajimobi family to release the news themselves.
Today, June 25, exactly one week after Soyombo's tweet, it has now become widespread knowledge that the former governor has indeed passed on.
The 70-year-old, who had been on a life support machine since last week at First Cardiology Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, after slipping into a coma following Coronavirus complications, finally died on Thursday.
Sahara Reporters gathered that the former Oyo governor had a lung surgery since being rushed to the Lagos hospital but made no progress while his kidneys had also failed.
The rumours concerning his situation came true on Thursday as the ex-governor finally succumbed to the virus that has also killed several prominent Nigerians including late Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, who was also treated for the disease at First Cardiology Hospital until he died.
While the news of Ajimobi's death is made public today, no one can say for sure that the ex-governor passed on when the day Soyombo tweeted about it.
However, some people online are now saying that it actually happened that day on July 18 and some even implying that Soyombo deserves an acknowledgement of his journalistic prowess.
Here are some of the reactions:
@mandem200, "Well the day fisayo announced this was the actual day that this man died.... But u guys made mockery of him"
@Mothers_Grace, "Fisayo Soyombo said Ajimobi was dead last week, no one believed. Do you know what it takes to an investigative journalist? I guess you don't"
@Mothers_Grace, "Investigative journalism is different from twitter journalism, fisayo soyombo don't have the balls to speak trash on a matter his not sure of. Not easy to bag International awards RIP Constituted Authority!!"
