Quakes D Lopez Out 2-4 Weeks After Appendectomy
Jul 2, 2020
The San Jose Earthquakes will be short a defender when MLS play restarts next week, as Marcos Lopez underwent an appendectomy on Tuesday.
The team announced Wednesday that Lopez, who had the procedure in Orlando, will be sidelined for two to four weeks.
The Quakes, along with the other 25 MLS teams, are in central Florida ahead of the MLS is Back Tournament, which kicks off July 8.
Lopez, a 20-year-old who has played on the Peru men's national team, appeared in 18 games for the Quakes last year, making 15 starts. He recorded one assist and was issued seven yellow cards and one red card.
He did not play in either of San Jose's games to start the 2020 season before action was halted in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Earthquakes will open tournament play at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex against the Seattle Sounders on July 10. San Jose, Seattle, FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps comprise Group B.
The top two teams in each of the six groups will advance to the knockout round, where they will be joined by the third-place team in the one six-team group plus the three other third-place squads with the best records.
