Merseyside artist in row with Hugo Boss over hats and t-shirts

"It’s upsetting. Everything I do I do is for my family"
A Merseyside artist who started an online art club during lockdown has received a legal letter from fashion giants Hugo Boss over t-shirts and hats he's produced to help pay towards his "daughter's future."
Artist John Charles, originally from Kirkby , is known for painting some of Liverpool’s most iconic buildings and figures .
But during lockdown, he used his skills to instead host free virtual art classes on Facebook with his daughter Emmy from their home in Huyton , for children homeschooling due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Running every weekday for around four months, John and Emmy taught thousands of families across the region and beyond how to draw and would sign off at the end of each session with the motto 'Be Boss Be Kind.'
And after the classes' success and due to what he says was demand from local parents, John decided to continue the virtual art club and sell merchandise with the slogan, saving the money earned in a fund for his daughter for when she is older.
He applied for a trademark for the designs - and last week, the artist received a letter from solicitors Simmons & Simmons, who act for the Hugo Boss group of companies, stating they will be filing a "Notice of Threatened Opposition" against the application on behalf of their client.
