Everton vs Liverpool: Latest team and injury news with Naby Keita and Alisson out but Thiago and Mane to return, Ben Godfrey could make debut
Oct. 16, 2020
Thiago Alcantara, Sadio Mane and Joel Matip are all expected to return to the Liverpool squad for Saturday’s clash vs local rivals Everton.
However, one player who won’t feature for the Reds in the Merseyside derby – which is LIVE on talkSPORT from 12:30pm – is midfielder Naby Keita.
Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday that the 25-year-old will miss the trip to Goodison Park owing to a fitness issue.
Klopp has no other fresh injury concerns to contend with following the international break, though he is still without goalkeeper Alisson and Adrian will again deputise.
The reigning Premier League champions will be looking to bounce back from their disastrous 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa last time out , but face a fierce test against Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Everton are aiming to win a fifth straight Premier League game to open the 2020/21 campaign, and also have no fresh injury concerns heading into the game.
Centre-back Ben Godfrey could make his Toffees debut after joining the club in a £20m deal from Norwich City last week.
Everton’s last meeting against Liverpool in June, their first match following lockdown, was a dreary goalless draw in which both teams each managed just three shots on target with the visitors having 70 per cent possession.
Of the past eight fixtures four have finished 0-0, three were won 1-0 (twice) and 2-1 by Liverpool with December’s 5-2 success at Anfield the exception.
At Goodison Park on Saturday it will be exactly ten years since Everton last beat their neighbours, but for the first time since September 1989 the top-of-the-table Toffees go into the fixture ahead of their nearest rivals.
And Ancelotti is relishing the chance for his in-form side to test their mettle against Klopp’s reigning champions.
“I think it will be good for us to have this kind of test,” he said. “They are the best, they were the best last season and one of the best teams in the world, so it’s a fantastic challenge.
“The message for us is they are going to have an exciting game, it’s a derby. Be confident and be happy to play this game.
“I think the feeling in the dressing room is good. We’ve started really well, we know it will be a fantastic challenge. We are ready for the challenge, knowing it will be the most difficult challenge for us in this moment.”
