Timo Werner misses a SITTER for second game in a row for Chelsea during Champions League showdown with Rennes
Nov 25, 2020
Timo Werner missed another howler for Chelsea on Tuesday night in the opening stages of their Champions League clash in Rennes.
Frank Lampard’s men will advance to the Champions League knockout stages with a win in France, and the Germany forward was presented with the perfect opportunity to put his side ahead after just five minutes.
It looked a given the 24-year-old would stroke the ball home following an inch-perfect cross from Callum Hudson-Odoi after brilliant work on the right wing.
However, Werner ballooned the ball over from close range for the second game in a row, having squandered a similiar golden opportunity in his side’s 2-0 victory at Newcastle at the weekend.
At half-time, BT Sport pundit Peter Crouch couldn’t hide his shock at Werner’s miss.
He said: “How has he not scored this?
“It was a fantastic ball from the right hand side. He has got to score there.”
Thankfully for Werner, it was Hudson-Odoi who spared his teammates’ blushes by putting them ahead on 22 minutes with a crisp finish from close range after a sumptuous ball over the top from Mason Mount.
Werner did have the ball in the opposition’s net early on in the second half, but that strike was correctly ruled out for offside.
