Disclosed: Waititu Gives Detailed Account Of EACC Interrogation
Jun. 12, 2019
Kiambu Governor, Ferdinand Waititu, provided a detailed account regarding his trip to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission offices on Tuesday.
Speaking exclusively, the embattled governor maintained that he had surrendered himself to the EACC to clear the air regarding the county budget errors. He went on to disclose that EACC's CEO, Twalib Mbarak had summoned him seeking clarification over the various allegations laid against him as well as members of his county government.
"They just wanted some clarification regarding the clerical errors found in my county's budget," Waititu affirmed.
Waititu also denied reports that he had been grilled for 8 hours by EACC investigators as had been reported by the media, asserting that his interview lasted for only 30 minutes.
"My actual interview barely lasted for half an hour, the only reason I was at their offices for some time was because they were short-staffed and I was forced to wait," he expressed.
The Kiambu Governor was placed under the spotlight in front of the Senate County Public Accounts and Investments Committee on May 2, 2019, after it emerged that his county incurred Ksh2.5 billion abnormal expenditure, which he categorically disowned.
Some of the supplementary budget errors included Ksh973 million for the coordination of State House functions as well as Ksh58 million spent on the South Sudan peace process.
In his response, Waititu maintained that the bizarre inclusions were new to him as well and openly welcomed the office of the Auditor General to carry out a special audit.
“I strongly believe we did not spend the monies in those budget lines. I will not bear responsibility as the governor for something I don’t know," he asserted.
