Defiant Jubilee lawmakers Joshua Kutuny (Cherangany) and his Moiben counterpart Silas Kipkoech Tiren have met Opposition chief Raila Odinga to discuss the plight of farmers in Rift Valley.
The two leaders who were accompanied by officials of Strategic Food Reserve Trustee Fund (SFRTF) chaired by former Kwanza MP Noah Wekesa have been accusing Deputy President William Ruto of being behind the challenges facing farmers in the region.
The team visited Raila at his Capital Hill office on Thursday, July 11, where they briefed the former premier on the progress they were making in streamlining the sector and ensuring farmers get value for their produce.
"Received a briefing from officials of the Strategic Food Reserve Trustee Fund on the food situation in the country with a particular reference to Maize. The officials were accompanied by a section of MPs from Maize producing regions in our country," tweeted the Opposition leader after receiving the team
Maize farmers have decried low prices for their produce and delayed payment from National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Rift Valley and Western Kenya farmers have been the most affected areas and the Noah Wekesa-led task force is expected to speed up the process of facilitating payments and ensuring the prevailing market prices are fair.
The meeting with Raila came barely a day after Wekesa's team vehemently opposed the move by government to import 12.5 million bags of maize to ease an imminent acute shortage of the staple.
The ex legislator argued there was no reason for government yo import maize at the time farmers were preparing to harvest their produce.
"Importation of maize should not coincide with the harvest of the current crop, which will be ready in the next two months. This will destabilise market prices and subject farmers to losses," said Wekesa
